Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season

Growing Zones
Gorgeous little blue-green evergreens, the Baby Blueyes Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens f. glauca 'Baby Blueyes') is cute enough to deck out in bows and throw a gender reveal party once you've planted it in your landscape!
Baby Blueyes has spikey needles but in a color that is a soft, glaucous silvery blue tone. Forming a very compact dense form, the texture and color combination seem to glow softly! They'll seem to shine in the sun and stand out against snow or dark evergreens in mixed hedges!
Like other Colorado Blue Spruce, this blue-eyed baby form is incredibly cold-hardy and does best in cooler climates throughout USDA planting zones 2 to 7. True to its semi-dwarf form, it doesn't get above 15 feet in height or width (at the base) as it rises into a tapering pyramidal form.
Landscape Application:
Baby Blueyes Blue Spruce is the perfect little darling for small properties and tight spaces in the sun! Tuck this easygoing baby into your front lawn plantings for a pretty specimen that will draw the eye and accent every type of landscape style and theme! The soft blue-green hue brightens the entire area and looks fantastic all year round! A single Baby Blue Spruce will complete the look of your home as an anchor and soften the corner of an outbuilding beautifully!
What’s better than one miniature Colorado Blue Spruce lighting up your landscape? More of course! Treat yourself to twins, triplets, or octuplets and create rows, naturalized groupings, or hedges of these space-saving evergreens! You'll block an ugly view, slow the wind, add a touch of shade, add tons of color, and enjoy pretty privacy! Without any diaper changes!
Not the fastest growing evergreens, this Spruce only grows 6-8 inches per year because they are in it for the long run, so these frosted blue-green babies are in no hurry to grow up. Well-cared-for Spruce trees can live up to 600 years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forestry Service!
But get ready for decades of cooling summer color and bright Christmas Trees all winter! Birds love nesting in the dense branches and wildlife will move in and take shelter from storms and harsh weather all year round!
- Soft Silvery Blue-Green Glowing Year-Round Color
- Dense & Compact Growth
- Spikey Tightly Packed Evergreen Needles
- Bird & Wildlife Friendly
- Semi-Dwarf Size & Nearly No Maintenance!
- Specimens, Groupings, Hedges & Space-Saving Landscape Color
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Colorado Blue Spruce are easy-going conifers that just need full sun all day and a very well-drained location in your yard! Provide new plants with regular moisture using the Finger Test to ensure the roots do not dry out between waterings. However, once established, these hardy trees will only need extra moisture before winter and during prolonged drought and heat waves.
Spread a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist bark chips around the base, not piled up against the trunk, to hold soil moisture consistently, enrich and acidify the soil, and to insulate the roots. Plus this layer creates a nice finishing touch to your installation!
- Cold-Hardy & Needs Full Sun
- Needs Well-Drained Soil
- Regular Moisture - Low Moisture Needs Once Established
- Very Low-Maintenance
- Early Spring Trim But Rarely Needs Pruned
