Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

4.5" Container | 0.65 dry quarts | 0.72 dry liters |

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Add the perfect light-hearted accent to your garden design with the cheery golden foliage of First Editions® Sundrop™ Spirea (Spiraea 'Bailcarol'). You'll look forward to the shell-pink blooms in early summer!
This petite powerhouse never outgrows its allotted space. Use it to "pop" the edge of your foundation planting, or give your friend one in a pretty outdoor pot for her patio.
Butterflies love the fragrant flowers. Because they are held nearly flat...they are easier to land on and gather critical nectar!
Snip several of the blooms for a collection of tiny bud vases on a special tray on your coffee table. Add a few sprays of the brilliant yellow foliage for contrast.
Spirea performs so well in the landscape. This exceptional cultivar is extra hardy, and so winning with sunshine-yellow foliage. Plus, after the first round of blooms, a quick dead head of the old flowers will reward you with another round of fresh blooms!
Sundrop Spirea is a natural dwarf. Likely, with water and love, you'll never need to prune it beyond a bit of deadheading.
Make life more colorful with their help. This bold coloration contrasts beautifully with evergreens and purple-foliage perennials and shrubs.
Sundrop Spirea takes the cold without missing a beat. And that luminous gold won't quit in the heat of summer.
You'll cherish these outstanding small shrubs. Place your order for Sundrop Spirea from the plant experts at Nature Hills today!
How to Use First Editions® Sundrop™ Spirea in the Landscape
Celebrate the season with a long "ribbon" of color in your sunny borders. Create a solid row with a spacing 18 inches apart on center, measuring from the center of one to the center of the next.
Add staggered rows behind for a spectacular mass planting or groundcover. Partner with dramatic Black Knight Butterfly Bush for a long-lasting nectar resource over the course of many months.
This cultivar is especially welcome in modern foundation plantings. Expand your existing mulched bed, or prune mature evergreens to make room.
You'll love the look of a low informal Sundrop Spirea hedge along the length of your front walkway. Or plant them in a wide circle around your mailbox to make people smile.
Have you ever walked a Labyrinth at a church or hospital garden? Create your own with these sweet, tidy shrubs lining a planned path of contemplation.
Of course, they'll also look terrific in mixed borders. Unwind and allow this mounded sunshine to fill in and soften the look of your designs.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Plant these golden Spirea in full sun, with at least six hours of direct sunlight. The more sun, the better!
Plant in rich, well-drained soils that doesn't retain water for long. If you need to improve drainage, bring in additional soil to create a raised bed.
Sundrop needs moderate water on a regular basis. A three-inch layer of mulch helps tremendously, but pull it back away from directly touching the stems.
In early spring, prune if you want to shape them a bit, although their superior compact habit requires little care. Deadhead after the blooms are done to tidy things up...or get into the habit of snipping them at their height of beauty for cut flowers.
Add flowering plant fertilizer in early spring, following the application rate on the label. Please keep grass fertilizers far away from your blooming plants, as their nitrogen-rich recipe will actually curtail flowering.
What a friend you'll find with the incandescent personality of Sundrop Spirea. Don't miss this excellent natural hybrid of Goldmound and Daphne Spirea!
