Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Your Satsuma Plum needs at least 6 to 8 hours of full sun daily to produce the sweetest fruit. While it can survive in partial shade, you will notice a significant drop in fruit production and a higher risk of fungal issues on the leaves.
  • Soil: This tree thrives in deep, well drained loamy soil with a slightly acidic pH. If you have heavy clay, plant it on a slight mound or in a raised bed to keep the roots from sitting in water, which can lead to root rot.

Watering Requirements

For the first two years, provide 10 to 15 gallons of water per week to help the root system get established. Once mature, the Satsuma is moderately drought tolerant, but inconsistent watering during the fruiting season can cause the plums to split or drop prematurely. Aim for deep, infrequent soakings that reach 12 inches into the soil rather than light daily sprinkles.

Pruning Tips

Satsuma Plums fruit on wood that is 2 to 5 years old, so you want to prune in late winter before the buds break. Use an "open center" or "vase" shape by removing the central leader to allow light and air into the middle of the tree. This technique prevents disease and ensures the inner fruit ripens just as well as the outer fruit.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer in early spring just as the new growth begins. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages tender new growth that will not harden off before winter and could be easily killed by the first frost.

The Japanese-type Satsuma Plum Tree (Prunus salicina 'Satsuma') is a fantastic Plum for warmer climates and areas with mild winters. Starting as a cloud of white, fragrant blossoms and quickly transforming into delectable rosy-plum skinned fruit that is bursting with sweet red flesh!

Satsuma does need a pollinating partner so pair it with another Japanese Plum like Santa Rosa for a larger and extended harvest! You'll enjoy double the flowering accents in your yard and all the fruit you can eat right off the tree, plus more for canning, baking and cooking.

Plum Trees are lovely ornamental flowering trees and the rosy purple gems that form in late summer just add to the delight! A mid-sized tree that casts great shade and has a beautiful form among your gardens, can be pruned smaller yet as needed. You'll receive your tree with its lower limbs intact should you wish to keep them small for easy harvest, and for maximum screening and privacy potential!

Planting and Application:

These versatile trees can be used anywhere in your landscape as you'd use a flowering tree, but with the added benefit of syrupy sweet fruit that's healthy and bountiful as can be! Use as a fantastic specimen tree in your front yard to make traffic slow down at its sight, or to adorn your backyard seating areas, picnicking beneath the limbs and enjoying healthy treats.

Satsuma is easy to care for and has lots of bushy leaves and branching for all your screening and shelter needs. Double-duty edible landscaping plants give you back more every year! Plant with a pollinator using high-density planting tricks if space is at a premium.

  • Fragrant White Blossoms
  • Lush Bird-Friendly Green Foliage
  • Reddish-Plum Fruit
  • Sweet Red Interior
  • Specimen, Screening & Food Sustainability

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plum Trees love full sun and good air circulation to do their best. Plant in well-drained and highly enriched mulched beds to keep their roots cool and insulated. Provide regular moisture and fertility for best results.
