Solar Flare Prairieblues™ False Indigo (Baptisia x 'Solar Flare') is a large, shrub-like perennial that adds a romantic look to any garden with its 12-18" long flowering spikes. In late spring to early summer, small Pea-like blossoms open to a lemon yellow and then develop an orange blush as they age!

This plant boasts a striking upright, vase-shaped habit, with a dense flourish of sunny flowering spires that create a vivid fountain above the lovely foliage! Extremely vigorous, a mature plant will produce over 100 stems! The exposed lower stems and foliage remain an attractive blue-green all summer!

Solar Flare Prairieblues™ was developed by Dr. Jim Ault of the Chicago Botanic Garden. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9, these are incredibly hardy perennial plants that grow 3 to 4 feet in height when in bloom, and spread to 4 to 5 feet in width! Deer, pests, rabbits, and diseases rarely show up to cause issues!

Planting and Application:

Baptisia looks attractive on its own in the sun! Spectacular color in the spring, gleaming in the sunlight throughout your Cottage borders, Perennial beds, Cutting gardens, and Pollinator borders! Use these as prominent backdrops and focal point groupings throughout your sun gardens!

The brilliant blooms stand out against walls and fences, dark evergreen hedges, and brighten a tired foundation hedge! When planted in rows, groupings, and en masse, amplify the golden hue! Either as a brilliant planting of just Solar Flare Baptisia or combined in a border with other Prairieblues™ series False Indigo!

Prairieblues™, like all Baptisia, are cultivars of the hardy native wildflowers, having evolved in competition with deep-rooted Tall Grasses in the prairie. Enduring drought and wildfire, they have developed a very deep tap root to handle harsh sites! This means Baptisia thrives in Rock Gardens and is great for use in fire-wise landscaping!

Snip a few stems for your bouquets indoors and create spectacular displays using these specimens in large planters or decorative containers!

  • Stunning Yellow Pea-Like Blooms Age To Orange
  • Attractive Blue-Green Foliage & Vase-Shaped Clumps
  • Butterflies & Beneficial Pollinators Love These Blooms
  • Use in Cut Flower Arrangements
  • Long Flower Spires from Late Spring Through Early Summer
  • Compact, Native Cultivar Perfect For Modern Lots, Containers & En Masse

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Full sun is best for the most successful flowering and performance. Grow this Perennial in well-drained soil, but adapt to average conditions. Provide consistent watering throughout the first year in the ground, but once established, these are xeric plants! All plants appreciate a 3-4 inch layer of mulch over the root system whether they are in the ground or planters.

Deadhead after the flowers fade to clean up the mounds. In early spring, simply prune them to the ground. Their deep taproots give Baptisia the ability to survive long dry periods but do make it a challenge to move once it is established. If you are careful, you can try to divide larger clumps in the spring. Only do so if your perennials lose vigor or have reduced flowering.

  • Loves Cold, Sun & Heat!
  • High Performance, Salt & Drought Tolerant
  • Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soils
  • Low Maintenance & Low Moisture Once Established
  • Deadhead After Bloom & Prune Early Spring
  • Rabbits & Deer & Drought Resistant
