Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones 5-9
A showy hybrid Beardtongue that puts on a terrific display of deep rose color, the MissionBells™ Deep Rose Penstemon (Penstemon x 'Deep Rose'), bearing spikes of tubular flowers! Hummingbirds relish in these rosy-pink blooms with lighter interiors. You will love the contrast between the blossoms and their burgundy stems as the nodding blooms wave in the breeze and under the weight of all the bees squeezing into them for the valuable nectar reserves!
Deep Rose features tall wands of light and airy tubular blooms that hang bell-like from the 2-foot tall slender stems! The gorgeous mounds of green foliage are the perfect foil to the wand-like blooms and even look great as garden edging once those flowers fade.
MissionBells™ Penstemon are fantastic cultivars of the very hardy native wildflower found throughout the entire US. Highly adaptable to USDA growing zones 5-9, Deep Rose blooms vibrantly from late spring through the heat of summer, much to the delight of your cut flower vases and bouquets!
Planting and Application:
Deep Rose Penstemon are fantastic cut flower and pollinator border plants! The tall wands add height and color to Cottage borders and throughout modernized prairie and wildflower gardens in the sun! However, these elegant wands are tough enough for mailbox plantings, perfect for Fire-wise landscaping, as edging along paths and driveways, around mailboxes and that harsh hell-strip, or in Xeric plantings and Rock gardens! So versatile!
These are smaller upright perennials and are perfect for use as thrillers in containers and planters! You will love having these rosy blooms close by your favorite chair or hammock! Dress up a sunny porch or patio, and add butterflies and color to a seating area! Welcome everyone to your front door with rosy Penstemon waving tall in mixed planters!
- Rosy Pink Tall Wands on Burgundy Stems
- Upright Mounding Herbaceous Perennial
- Small-Sized Xeric & Very Easy-Care
- Pollinator-Friendly & Attracts Hummingbirds
- Specimen, Rock Gardens, Borders & Large Planters
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Penstemon flowers best in full sun and in well-drained soil conditions, preferring average soil types on the lean side. Provide regular moisture access throughout their first year, but once these herbaceous perennials are established, they are blissfully drought-tolerant and xeric! Provide a 3-4 inch thick layer of Mulch around their crowns well. Very cold tolerant, you can leave the seed heads as winter interest and attract songbirds, or you can deadhead after the flowers fade. Trim all foliage down late fall after frost, and divide every few years to maintain the vigor of the crown.
- Full Sun Blooms
- Average to Low Fertility & Average to Low Moisture
- Well-Drained Soil & Appreciates Mulch
- Drought-Tolerant Once Established
- Deer & Rabbit-Resistant
