Moonglow® Sweetbay Magnolia is an extraordinarily versatile native tree that delivers sweetly fragrant, creamy white flowers from mid-spring through summer while maintaining semi-evergreen to evergreen foliage that shimmers with silver-white undersides in the breeze. This elegant cultivar grows to about 35 feet with an oval to vase-shaped form and is far more cold-hardy than most sweetbay magnolias, remaining evergreen even in Zone 5. Its ability to thrive in wet, boggy soils makes it one of the most adaptable flowering trees available.
- Sweetly fragrant (lemony) creamy white flowers, 2–3 in. diameter, from spring through summer
- Glossy green leaves with distinctive silvery-white undersides that shimmer in the breeze
- Semi-evergreen to evergreen depending on climate, stays evergreen to Zone 5
- Tolerates wet, boggy soils, one of the few flowering trees for wet sites
- Native to eastern North America, excellent wildlife and ecological value
- Elegant oval to vase-shaped form, ~35 ft. tall, graceful specimen or shade tree
- Hardy in Zones 5–10
Moonglow® Sweetbay Magnolia thrives in full sun to part shade with moist to wet, acidic, organic-rich soil. Unlike most magnolias, it thrives in wet, poorly drained sites and near water features, making it an exceptional choice for rain gardens and low-lying areas. Water regularly during establishment. Once rooted, it is highly adaptable and tolerates periodic flooding. Minimal pruning is needed, remove crossing branches in late winter if necessary. This exceptional native tree fills the garden with fragrance for months on end. Order today!
