Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This juniper thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily to maintain its dense, vibrant blue-green foliage. While it can tolerate some afternoon shade, too much shade will cause the branches to thin out and lose that signature "carpet" look.
  • Soil: It prefers sharp-draining soil and is not picky about pH levels. If you have heavy clay, plant it in a slight mound or add several handfuls of coarse sand to the backfill to ensure water doesn't sit around the roots and cause rot.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, water your Mini Arcade Juniper twice a week to help the roots dive deep into the surrounding soil. Once the plant is established, it is remarkably drought tolerant and usually only needs a drink during extreme summer heat waves. If the soil stays soggy for too long, the inner needles will turn brown and drop prematurely due to root stress.

Pruning Tips

Because this shrub is a slow grower with a natural spreading habit, it rarely needs a haircut. If you must tidy it up, prune in early spring before new growth begins, as junipers do not easily sprout from old, leafless wood. Think of pruning as a "light trim" to remove stray branches rather than a heavy rejuvenation, which ensures you don't leave permanent "bald spots" in the canopy.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release evergreen fertilizer once in early spring to fuel the season's growth. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, because this can force tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first hard freeze. This late-season growth is easily damaged by winter burn, which turns the tips of the branches a brittle brown.

The Mini Arcade Juniper bush (Juniperus sabina 'Mini Arcade') is a sweet and petite, textured fluffy dwarf shrub. This compact selection of the Arcadia Juniper features excellent, feathery evergreen foliage! Featuring a soft green color throughout all four seasons, Mini Arcade is a wonderful little landscape gem!

Mini Arcade is lower and more spreading than its parent shrub with a lovely layered effect to the branching. Achieving only 8 to 12 inches in height and 3 to 4 feet in width, making it a wonderful steady green groundcover to fill the landscape with weed-blocking greenery all year round! Featuring dense cover for birds, Junipers are generally deer-resistant and are wonderful winter interest!

Cold-hardy throughout a wide range of USDA growing zones 3 to 8, these highly adaptable little conifers also go by the name Calgary Carpet, Mini Arcade is a bit slower growing than other Junipers but that just means it will also be much lower maintenance!

Planting and Application:

The layered branching habit of Mini Arcade gives the subtle appearance of soft undulations in the ground beneath it! Growing low and spreading ornamentally as garden filler and landscape edging! Add some pretty green fringe along the fronts of leggier larger shrubs to hide their bare lower limbs! You'll love beefing up mature hedges with these year-round facer plants!

Mini Arcade would serve nicely in a small Zen garden, or spruce up your foundation hedges! Plant around water features and add a lacy fringe along a path or garden edges! These Junipers can be drought tolerant and have low-moisture needs once established, so plant them in your dry river bed plantings or Rock Gardens!

Not the best shrubs for along streets and sidewalks, but these little shrubs do beautifully where they won't get exposed to salt and away from pet's potty areas.

These sweet evergreens even work great in large planters and containers as lovely spillers and fillers! Use as the primary specimen planting in a large urn on either side of a sunny front porch or on either side of a pathway's entrance as a formal fluffy welcome!

  • Layered Green Fluffy Evergreen Shrub
  • Low-Growing & Wide-Spreading
  • Great Bird Shelter & Winter Interest
  • Compact Dwarf Form of Arcade Juniper
  • Containers, Small-Space Gardening, Edging, Groundcover & Facer Plants

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This lovely little Juniper varierty does well in dry soils once established that are well-drained, but new shrubs need regular moisture during their first growing season. The best color and growth can be achieved in a partial shade to full sun exposure. Provide your shrubs with a 3-4 inch layer of mulch for insulation and soil moisture retention. Slower growth means low maintenance and easy care, but if you do wish to prune your evergreen, do so after flowering. Evergreens appreciate a deep watering before winter, especially in areas where windburn is common in colder climates.

  • Full Sun Evergreens
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Needs
  • Compact Slow Growth - Rarely Needs Pruning
  • Deer-Resistant & Cold-Hardy
