Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant in a spot that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily to ensure strong stems and a high bud count. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade helps the vibrant pink blooms last longer without bleaching.
  • Soil: These roses prefer rich, loamy soil that drains as well as a colander. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of organic compost or plant in a raised mound to prevent the roots from sitting in stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, provide about one inch of water per week to help the root system anchor itself deep in the soil. Once established, this rose is quite resilient, but inconsistent watering will lead to smaller flowers and premature leaf drop. Always water at the base of the plant rather than the leaves to keep the foliage dry and prevent fungal issues.

Pruning Tips

Since True Passion™ blooms on new wood, you should prune in early spring just as the leaf buds begin to swell. Think of this like a fresh start for the season. Remove any dead or crossing canes and cut the remaining healthy stems back to about twelve inches high at a 45 degree angle to encourage vigorous new growth and a flush of fresh roses.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced rose fertilizer or a slow release granular formula once in early spring and again after the first major bloom cycle. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because they stimulate tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. This ensures the plant enters dormancy healthy rather than stressed by cold damage.

These Roses are so easy to live with! Just give them plenty of sunlight, air circulation and well-drained soil. They need at least six hours of sunlight a day. And you can improve drainage with extra soil heaped into a planting mound or raised bed!

Give your Rose life-long support with Nature Hills Root Booster when you plant. Our experts recommend it for Roses, as it develops a symbiotic relationship with the feeder roots. Supply a consistent amount of water on a regular schedule. Place a three-inch layer of mulch to keep water and mud from splashing up onto the foliage..then pull it back from directly touching the stems. Feed Roses with a high-quality slow-release fertilizer for flowering plants according to the directions. Reapply as directed until mid-summer.
