Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this bush at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. While it can survive in partial shade, you will sacrifice fruit production and flavor intensity for foliage.
  • Soil: Blueberries are strict about needing acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. If you have heavy clay or alkaline soil, save yourself the struggle and plant in raised beds or large containers using a mix rich in peat moss.

Watering Requirements

Blueberries have incredibly shallow, fibrous root systems that dry out quickly, so consistent moisture is vital during the establishment period. Once established, they still need roughly an inch of water per week to plump up the berries. Inconsistent watering often leads to small, shriveled fruit and stressed plants, so keep a 3-inch layer of mulch over the roots to hold moisture in.

Pruning Tips

Prune in late winter while the plant is still dormant to inspect the structure easily. Focus on "cane renewal" by cutting the oldest, thickest canes (usually gray and peeling) all the way to the ground to encourage fresh, productive shoots. This keeps the bush young and ensures you are fruiting on vigorous wood rather than old, tired branches.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a granular fertilizer formulated specifically for acid-loving plants (like Holly-tone) in early spring just as new growth begins. Avoid fertilizing after July, as high nitrogen late in the season pushes soft growth that will be damaged by winter frost.
