Golden Jubilee Peach Perfect Choice for Backyard Growers
The Golden Jubilee Peach traces its roots to the oldest peach growing region in the United States, which is New Jersey. Peaches have been grown commercially in New Jersey since the 1600's. Atlases published in Scotland in 1864 called New Jersey "The Garden of the World" and this may have contributed to the nickname "the Garden State".
The New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station at Rutgers University, in North Brunswick, New Jersey was established in the 1880's. Their mandate was to breed plants to suit the New Jersey grower and home owner. The New Jersey Peach industry, one of the largest in the nation, had peaked in the late 1800's and challenged by disease, pests, and emerging competition, went into decline in the early 1900's.
The Peach breeding program at the Rutgers Vineland location began in 1907 with a directive to breed more competitive peach varieties for the New Jersey growers. Freestone was becoming high in demand, and 9 varieties were introduced between 1921 and 1925.
Then, in 1926, the Golden Jubilee Peach, a seedling of the Elberta crossed with a selection called Greensboro, was released. It is said to have outstanding flavor and good disease resistance. The selection is given the name Golden Jubilee to honor the 50th anniversary of the New Jersey State Home Horticultural Society.
The variety finds some commercial success but because of its uneven ripening and lack of red in the skin, it never really becomes of great interest in the commercial market. However, the home gardener who becomes introduced to the wonderful flavor and soft melting flesh is quick to raise demand.
