Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Overlease Pawpaws produce the best fruit yields in full sun, meaning at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light. While they grow well in partial shade, you will notice fewer fruits and a more open, lanky branch structure compared to the dense growth seen in sunnier spots.
  • Soil: These trees crave rich, well draining soil that mimics a forest floor. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" or standing water will rot the roots and kill the tree.

Watering Requirements

During the first two years of establishment, provide 1 inch of water per week to ensure the deep taproot develops properly. Once mature, Pawpaws are moderately drought tolerant, but inconsistent moisture during the summer will cause the large tropical leaves to droop and the fruit to drop prematurely. Deep, weekly soakings during dry spells keep the fruit fleshy and sweet.

Pruning Tips

Since Pawpaws bloom on one year old wood, you should prune in late winter or very early spring before the flower buds begin to swell. Focus on removing crossing branches or thinning the center to allow light to reach the inner fruit clusters. Think of it like opening a window to let the breeze through, which helps prevent fungal issues and ensures every branch gets enough energy to support the heavy fruit.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a well balanced, granular fruit tree fertilizer once in early spring as new growth starts. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers in late summer because they encourage tender new growth that will be killed off by the first frost. Using a layer of arborist wood chips as mulch also provides a slow release of nutrients as it breaks down, mimicking the natural woodland environment these trees love.
