Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the best flower production and a dense canopy, plant your Ivory Pillar in full sun, which means at least 6 hours of direct light daily. While it can handle light afternoon shade, too much shade will result in fewer blooms and a more open, leggy growth habit.
  • Soil: This lilac prefers moist, well drained soil that is rich in organic matter. If you have heavy clay, mix in some compost to improve drainage, as "wet feet" or standing water can lead to root rot issues.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, provide about 1 inch of water per week to help the root system get established. Once mature, the Ivory Pillar is quite hardy and can handle occasional dry spells, but inconsistent moisture during extreme heat can lead to scorched leaf edges. Aim for deep soakings at the base of the tree rather than frequent light sprinkles to encourage deep root growth.

Pruning Tips

Because this tree blooms on "old wood" produced the previous year, you should only prune immediately after the flowers have faded in late spring. Use clean shears to remove spent flower panicles or any crossing branches to keep the columnar shape tidy. Pruning too late in the summer or fall will remove next year's flower buds, resulting in a green tree with no white plumes the following spring.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as the new growth begins to emerge. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this stimulates tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost.
