Trovita is well-known for an extra-long season of harvest. Add this variety to enjoy fresh oranges from February to November! #ProPlantTips for Care:
Trovita Trees are low-maintenance Citrus Trees. Just give them full sun, well-drained soil, and moderate water! Container and in-ground plants like to dry out a bit between waterings. Provide a slightly acidic soil environment and a regular fertilizer routine using an acid-loving plant fertilizer. Prune for size and to maintain an open canopy for airflow and sunlight penetration after harvest.
If the temperatures in your area ever dip below that 40°F range or are prone to overnight frosts, then you need to be ready to protect your tree.
Although Citrus can grow year-round in warmer regions (zones 9 and 10), they can also thrive in colder areas (zones 4 to 7) as long as the tree is brought indoors prior to the first frost of winter.
In zone 8, you can cover your tree in the event of a cold snap or unexpected overnight freeze. Citrus will need to be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill, and not planted in a low area that collects cold air. If a spot like that is unavailable, or you are in a chill-prone climate, then you are safer planting Citrus Trees in a large, deep container with wheels to easily move them to a protected location or indoors when needed.
In cold growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors in the fall, or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside. Indoor plants need a bright indirect sun window, greenhouse, sunroom, or enclosed patio for the winter. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.

Very Juicy Sweet Orange for Cool Climates
Howard B. Frost worked at the University of California's Citrus Experimental Station in Riverside, California from 1913 to the late 1950's. During this early period of genetic research, Frost would contribute to the basic understanding of the genetic behavior of Citrus. Frost was a pioneer in Citrus hybridization efforts and is credited with recognizing and describing the mechanism to produce seedless Citrus fruit.
The Trovita Orange was not a specific hybrid created by Frost, rather it was a seedling from a fallen fruit, thought to be a Washington Navel Orange. The fact that the Washington Navel was typically seedless must have occurred to Frost when he discovered the fruit in 1916. However, he had sharp eyes for desirable traits and watched this seedling closely.
The Trovita Orange was a bit smaller than the Washington and had some seeds, but other qualities were apparent. Trovita was very juicy, much more so than the Washington. Trovita had a very pleasant orange flavor and ripened in the early spring near the end of the Washington Navel's fruiting season. In addition, the fruit would remain on the tree for a long time and maintain its great flavor into July in citrus growing areas.
In 1928, Frost named it Trovita (Esperanto for "found") and in 1935 it was released for distribution. Although it didn't draw much attention from the California Citrus Growers, the Arizona Citrus industry found it to be highly adapted to the hot dry desert climate. Fast becoming associated with the Arizona Sweet Oranges, Trovita became a popular commercial selection in Arizona which it remains today.
Trovita came into its own in the home garden market, primarily due to its ripening time. By the mid-1970s, it was distributed throughout the entire state of California and Arizona, including tremendous success on the California Coast, where traditionally Sweet Oranges do not sweeten well. The Trovita became the #1 variety of orange recommended for cool climate plantings.
Today, the Trovita remains popular for its great taste and wide range of adaptations. It is currently being recommended for those wishing to experiment with indoor/outdoor growing of sweet oranges. We know Frost would wish you well!
