Darling little flower clusters and shiny leaves, the McKenzie Chokeberry Bush (Aronia melanocarpa 'McKenzie') is a darling ornamental fruiting shrub with great fall color and the easy-going nature that you'd expect from a native cultivar! Fragrant, healthy and wildlife-friendly, these shrubs have it all!

McKenzie features spring clusters of darling pink buds that open to lovely pinkish-tinged white 5-petaled flowers! These attract loads of pollinators and beneficial insects to pollinate the blooms! Flowering in May to June, the berries soon arrive in August or September. Forming clusters of near-black berries that soon get picked up by flocks of songbirds and wildlife unless you get to them first!

A robust growing seedling selection grows quickly into an excellent landscape shrub with flowers, highly desirable fruit, and fall color making this fruiting shrub highly desirable as an edible landscaping shrub! Aronia Chokeberry Bushes can grow to an upright clump of 7-10 feet tall and 5-6 feet wide. The glossy foliage turns into a lovely mixture of orange, red, purple and mahogany hues!

Planting and Application:

McKenzie is an upright selection that becomes an excellent addition to shelterbelts and windbreaks, screening, and creating large informal hedges! Use groupings or rows for wildlife and birds, or as ornamental privacy that double as edible landscaping bushes!

Chokeberry Bushes are considered superfruits and used in the edible landscape for the high concentrations of anthocyanins and antioxidant properties! Back your kitchen garden, vegetable garden or herb garden with these fruiting shrubs! A single self-pollinating specimen anchors a corner of the garden or looks wonderful along your foundation. Often used in commercial plantings, however, these incredible 3-season interest shrubs are the gift that keeps on giving!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3 through 8 and are highly adaptable to the type of soil or climate. Aronia Bushes do best in full sun but can tolerate partial shade in hotter climates, but you may see fewer flowers and fruit. Plant Aronia in well-drained rich soil that is moderate to moist. Prune to remove suckers and perform renewal pruning after flowering. These shrubs appreciate mulch in hotter climates or drier conditions.
