Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.
Young Plants (6 months to 18 months old)
Container Size | Actual Volume | Metric Equivalent |
---|---|---|
2" x 2" x 3" | 0.18 - 0.21 dry quarts | 0.20 - 0.23 dry liters |
4" Container | 0.31 - 0.87 dry quarts | 0.35 - 0.96 dry liters |
4.5" Container | 0.65 dry quarts | 0.72 dry liters |
6" Container | 1.4 dry quarts | 1.59 dry liters |
1 Quart | 1 dry quart | 1.1 dry liters |
5.5" Container | 1.89 dry quarts | 2.08 dry liters |
Established Plants (18 months to 2.5 years old)

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones 3-8
The Winged Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus) is an ornamental plant native to Asia with exceptional fall color! The 3-inch medium green foliage maintains its healthy intensity throughout the hot summer months before transforming into its own hot color!
Not only does the Burning Bush fit this description, but it will also provide you with a magnificent red fall color! As its name implies, your Burning Bush will present itself in the fall as a blazing crimson flame amid the declining foliage of your gardens.
Spring brings yellowish dainty blooms that pollinators adore. The blooms transform into tiny red fruit that appear to provide your feathered friends with a much-needed autumn snack.
After the fall display, and as winter progresses, the cork-like ridges along your Burning Bushes branches will be exposed! Revealing the reason behind the "winged" portion of your extraordinary shrub's name and provides incredible winter interest! Very cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 8, the Winged Euonymus is a solid choice for four seasons of interest!
Planting and Application:
Imagine an ornamental shrub in your yard that is extremely hardy, won't require any special care and readily adapts to almost any size and shape that you prefer. One would look great as a border or foundation planting in your yard, or even as an informal hedge! These are naturally rounded and tidy, but take to shearing well too!
The Burning Bush tends to grow wider than it is tall and can be easily pruned smaller if you need! Or go big and train this tree into a multi-trunked tree form that can get 10 feet in height and 8-12 feet in width!
Create a lush privacy hedge along the front of your property to divide your home from the sidewalk, or along the edge to screen out a messy neighbor. Hide an ugly eye sore or soften the corner of your home or outbuilding with these densely branched shrubs!
Use several shrubs in bird-friendly groupings to amplify the remarkable brilliance of the fall color. It's an outstanding display. Great for erosion control on hillsides, you'll turn a slope into a fiery display when planting Burning Bushes en masse!
- Long Pointed Green Foliage
- Yellowish Blooms In Spring & Reddish Fruit In Fall
- Exceptional Red Fall Color
- Showy Branches With Winged Corky Ridges
- Pollinator-Friendly & Bird-Friendly
- Brilliant Hedges, Specimens, Accents & Privacy
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Not bothered by pollution, insects, or disease, Burning Bushes are very low-maintenance! Performing well in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soils as long as they are well-drained. Provide moderate regular moisture throughout the growing season and top off the soil with 3 to 4 inches of arborist mulch, to keep the root system cool and moist.
If you do prune, right after flowering is best to remove the flowers before they go to seed. Arborist mulch also allows you to increase the time between supplemental watering.
- Full Sun
- Best in Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Prune After Flowering To Remove Seeds
- Pollution, Deer, Insect & Disease-Resistant
Nature Hills understands that this genus sometimes grows too well in certain areas. Birds eat the seeds and spread them around where they can grow and overtake other plants. That's why we use Plant Sentry™ to block shipments into regulated areas. Just punch in your zip code into our Zone Finder to see if it will work for your community.
For those that can safely grow it, there is nothing like the bright splash of bold red of the Winged Burning Bush!
