Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Visions® Astilbe thrives in dappled to full shade (2 to 4 hours of sun). While it can handle more sun in northern climates if the soil stays wet, too much direct afternoon light will cause the fern-like foliage to "burn" or turn crispy at the edges.
  • Soil: These plants are "heavy drinkers" and prefer rich, loamy soil that holds onto moisture. If you have heavy clay, mix in organic compost to improve drainage while keeping the nutrients high; if your soil is sandy, add peat moss to help it act more like a sponge.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, check the soil daily and water whenever the top inch feels dry to ensure the root system anchors deeply. Once established, this variety is more drought-tolerant than other Astilbes, but it still requires consistent moisture to produce those iconic upright plumes. If the soil dries out completely, the plant may go dormant early or produce stunted, pale flowers as a survival tactic.

Pruning Tips

Since this plant blooms on new wood, you should leave the spent flower stalks up through winter to provide texture in the garden and protect the crown from cold. In early spring, just as new green growth appears at the base, "give it a haircut" by cutting the old stems and dead foliage back to ground level. This cleanup allows the plant to funnel all its energy into fresh, vibrant leaves rather than maintaining old debris.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer (like a 10-10-10 formula) in early spring just as the first buds emerge. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft, leafy growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. A layer of organic mulch around the base is also helpful to keep the roots cool and slowly feed the soil as it breaks down.

The Visions® Astilbe (Astilbe chinensis 'Visions'), is a colorful feathery raspberry-purple flower with fragrant blooms and lacy blue-green foliage! The flowers contrast wonderfully with the glossy foliage.

Visions® bloom in the summer weeks and stand tall on sturdy stems above the mounds of lacy, finely cut dark green pointed-lobed leaves that have a bronzy overtone. These robust perennials are easy to grow and work great as ornamental foliage plants all on their own.

The sturdy stems and showy blooms not only look great in a grand bouquet and last for a long time in the vase, but when left outdoors, Visions® will attract hummingbirds and butterflies galore!

Astilbe is considered to be disease, deer, and rabbit-resistant, and handles USDA planting zones 4-8, growing 24 - 30 inches in height when in flower, but the foliage mounds spread 15 - 24 inches wide.

Landscape Application:

Plant this amazing little plant in your shady Cottage gardens, mixed perennial borders, and in accent groupings, or rows around your garden beds and borders as edging. Pollinator borders and cutting gardens are no-brainer locations for these showy fluffy flowers!

Use Visions® as easy care and fast-filling groundcover, and create gorgeous drifts by massing Astilbe throughout shade gardens and woodland settings. In smaller settings, Visions® put on a show in urban courtyards and small-space gardens, or even container gardens on porches, patios, and balcony gardens in the shadier locations around your yard!

Plant this showy perennial for beautiful summer color in shady areas, beneath the canopy of trees, or around the base of large shrubs. You will be delighted to see how this plant forms a graceful perennial border, or add to shade gardens with Hostas and Ferns!

  • Raspberry Purple Fluffy Flowering Spires
  • Gorgeous Pointed Cut-Leaf Green Leaves
  • Showy Blooms For Pollinators & Hummingbirds
  • Grand Bouquets & Dried Flower Arrangements
  • Mass Plantings, Edging, Groupings, Container Gardens & Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

While most Astilbe handles moist to high-moisture locations, Visions® can be more tolerant of drier soil settings. Astilbe are most successfully grown in a shady area, be it in partial sun, partial shade, or dappled all-day shade, and loves some morning sun and a bit more sun, especially in cooler climates. Visions® prefers moist, humusy, organically rich soils but you will find Astilbe to be a bit more tolerant of drier soils when in more shade. A moist, well-drained area is a key feature for growing a healthy plant. To keep Astilbe looking good for the next year, do not cut it back in the winter, because the old foliage helps protect the plant from the winter damage, instead prune down in early spring.

  • Long-Lived Perennial For Partial Shade
  • Cold Hardy & Widely Adaptable
  • Moisture Loving
  • Prune In Early Spring
  • Deer & Rabbit Resistant
