Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Deutschland Astilbe thrives in dappled or full shade, requiring less than 4 hours of sun. While it can handle more morning light in cooler climates, too much direct sun will scorch the delicate white plumes and turn the foliage crispy.
  • Soil: These plants love rich, organic soil that stays consistently moist. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost to improve drainage while retaining moisture, as these roots do not like to sit in stagnant water or dry out completely.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water your Astilbe twice a week to ensure the root system establishes deeply. Once mature, this plant needs about one inch of water per week to maintain its lush appearance. If the soil dries out, the plant will quickly signal its stress with brown, curling leaf edges and smaller, drooping flower spikes.

Pruning Tips

Because Astilbe blooms on new wood, you should wait until early spring to cut back the dead foliage from the previous year. This timing allows the old leaves to protect the plant’s crown through the winter months. Think of this like clearing away last year's mulch to make room for fresh, vigorous growth and bright white flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release fertilizer in early spring just as the new green shoots begin to poke through the soil. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer. Excess nitrogen at that time encourages soft, leafy growth that is easily damaged by the first frost, preventing the plant from entering its natural winter dormancy.

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Astilbe thrives in rich, cool, partially shaded, and moist locations. These herbaceous perennials are considered to be pest, disease, deer and rabbit-resistant without much care or maintenance! Mulch around the base of the plant is always a great addition, to help maintain moisture during those dryer months.

It's recommended to wait to cut the foliage back until spring, as that will help protect the plant during the winter months. It's also best to fertilize Astilbe in late spring before the flowers emerge. Divide the clumps every few years to maintain their shape and vigor!

  • Partial Shade Perennial
  • Well-Drained Soil That's Organically Enriched
  • Consistent Moisture
  • Prune Early Spring Before New Growth
  • Easy To Grow & Deer, Pest, Disease & Rabbit-Resistant

Wherever you choose to plant your beautiful and elegant white Deutschland Astilbe, it will stand out in your shade garden! Order soon at NatureHills.com to enjoy the fluffy white flowers growing in your landscape!
