The jaw-droppingly gorgeous White Catawba Rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense 'Album') is one of the easiest Rhododendron varieties to grow! Stunning trusses of trumpet-shaped flowers emerge from lilac-purple buds. The flower features luminous white petals, which are punctuated with large daubs of jazzy canary yellow!
Early emerging pollinators will appreciate these billowing trusses and show off all spring! Snip a few blooms for indoor vases, but keep the majority of the show outside to attract all the attention! Once the blooms fade, the deep green foliage will stick around year-round and provide structure and color!
In time, it will grow into a dense, upright, and spreading flowering landscape asset. They'll perform beautifully in both cold climates, sun, and high heat with the right light and soil conditions. Cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8 and grow to a sizeable 5-6 feet in height and width.
Planting and Application:
This isn't exactly a shy, retiring type. Instead, it's a bold, fresh presence in the landscape and can be used in several ways, from foundation planting, to hedging and screening or as an accent!
This easy-to-grow variety is a prominent specimen in the spring, but blends into a mixed shrub border, backdrop hedge, or sturdy property division planting! Use behind your patio to give you a welcome private year-round retreat. You can even create a special Garden Room using a series of these as "living walls" to surround all sides of your space.
White Catawba is a great selection to use in foundation plantings but gives it enough room to make a statement. Try it at the corner of your house and allow them to fill into their full height and width to amaze your neighborhood.
Plant multiple shrubs to fill a wide, open area with their spreading habit. Massed plantings grow into an incredible feature! Use a zigzagging planting pattern spaced 4 feet apart for faster results. Measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
- Large, Showy Trusses Of White Blooms
- Early Season Flowering Show
- Attracts Hummingbirds & Butterflies
- Broad-Leaved Evergreen With Dark Green Leaves
- Hedges, Accents, Specimens & Four Season Color
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Rhododendrons in a spot where they will receive morning sun and partial shade in the afternoon. Acidic soils with a low pH between 4.5 to 6 and a high concentration of organic materials are best. Rhododendrons also require very well-drained soil.
Apply a regular application of water to keep them evenly moist. With proper care, is actually a very low-maintenance variety, and one of the original Iron-Clad Series of Rhododendrons, you'll love how tough this shrub is in good draining, acidic soil. Got clay? The White Catawba will thrive as long as it has drainage.
You'll want to improve the drainage of clay soil by creating a raised bed 18 inches tall and amending the soil in that bed with both pine needle compost. You'll also "mound up" your Rhododendron when planting. When planting, leave about two inches of the root ball sticking up above the new soil level, then cover the whole thing with a deep layer of pine mulch.
You can incorporate several handfuls of compost, and acidic soil conditioner, but try not to overdo it. The root system should spread wide and grow down into your unamended native soil, after all. Use Nature Hills Root Booster when planting to support the root system as it grows and for the life of the plant.
Please don't disturb the shallow root system. Keep the area underneath free of weeds for best results and top-dress your plant with a light layer of acidic pine mulch during the growing season. This will work naturally to improve the quality of your soil over time. Only prune flowering broad-leaved evergreen shrubs immediately after the flowers fade to avoid removing next year's spring display!
- Full Sun & Partial Shade/Afternoon Shade
- Low Maintenance in Well-Drained, Acidic Soils
- Regular Moisture & Appreciates Mulched Beds
- Prune Only After Flowering
- Very Cold Hardy & Heat Tolerant
