Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This variety thrives in partial shade, ideally receiving filtered light or about 2 to 4 hours of morning sun. While it can handle more sun in cooler climates, too much direct afternoon heat will scorch those dark, glossy leaves and dull their metallic bronze luster.
  • Soil: Aim for rich, consistently moist soil that mimics a woodland floor or a pond edge. If you have heavy clay, mix in plenty of compost to improve drainage while keeping moisture close; if your soil is sandy, add peat moss to prevent it from drying out too fast.

Watering Requirements

During the first growing season, keep the soil consistently damp to help the thick rhizomes establish a deep root system. Once mature, Bronze Peacock remains a thirsty plant that requires deep watering twice a week during the heat of summer to prevent the leaf edges from turning brown and crispy. While it can tolerate wet feet better than most perennials, inconsistent moisture will lead to stunted growth and smaller flower plumes.

Pruning Tips

This perennial grows from a central crown and does not require traditional pruning, so think of maintenance more like a seasonal cleanup. In early spring, cut back the dead, blackened foliage from the previous year just as the new "peacock-tail" bronze leaves begin to unfurl. Removing spent flower stalks at the base after they fade in midsummer will direct the plant's energy back into its spectacular foliage rather than seed production.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release granular fertilizer or a layer of rich compost in early spring as new growth appears. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. A thick layer of organic mulch around the base is equally important to keep the roots cool and lock in the moisture this plant craves.

So exotic, this thrilling new offering will delight your shade gardens and fill them with tropical flair! The Bronze Peacock Rodgersia (Rodgersia pinnata 'Bronze Peacock') has amazing color changes all growing season.

Named Bronze Peacock because of the way the new growth emerges and spreads like a Peacock's tail, these burst onto the scene with brilliant red-purple and bronzy colors!

The deeply textured, pleated, pinnate and toothy leaves mature to a deep green and are glossy whorls. Red stems and purple highlights further decorate these curiosities! Taking on reddish-bronze fall color to finish out the growing season.

The show isn't over because in spring, tall floral spikes of fluffy pink blooms rise above Rodgersia's intriguing foliage backdrop to call pollinators from far and wide!

The entire spectacle almost looks like a tropical cousin to Coral Bells with blossoms reminiscent of Astilbe. In fact, these look amazing when paired with those plants in your shaded garden beds!

How to Use Bronze Peacock Rodgersia In The Landscape

Loving moist shade and even stream or pond side conditions, Bronze Peacock Rodgersia thrives as an understory accent plant or impressive specimen in the dappled shade!

Plant along water features or around a shady rain garden for an impressive display of architectural presence and a tropical bit of panache.

A modest-sized perennial, the foliage creates an amazing backdrop to set other plants and perennials off against. The blooms rise to almost 4-5' in height and provide upright sculptural accents!

Woodland settings get tropical vacation treatment without the worry of deer causing damage. Dry shady beds and large planters are perfect places to highlight this unique plant!

#ProPlantTips For Care

The darkest foliage of any Rodgersia, Bronze Peacock does best in part shade. Winter hardy in USDA growing zones 5 through 8, these even tolerate some dry shade, though moisture really is what makes this plant thrive!

In colder climates, Rodgersia can handle some full sun but prefer dappled shade or afternoon shade from the summer sun.

Best in well-drained, high moisture soil, Bronze Peacock is not drought-tolerant. They do best in moist, rich, humusy soil that won't dry out. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.

A deciduous perennial, clean up the crown in late winter or early spring before you see new growth. Otherwise, there is no need to prune these plants.

Add tropical flair and exotic character, plus loads of color to your garden this year with the inclusion of Bronze Peacock Rodgersia! Order yours from Nature Hills today!
