Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 4-9
You might know the hardiness and bold beauty of the native Echinacea from the pretty purple flowers that are tough and resilient. While these are pretty on their own, the pinkish burgundy Coneflower hybrid, Sombrero® Baja Burgundy Coneflower (Echinacea x 'Balsombabur') is here to shake things up!
The deep pinkish burgundy-purple flowers are unequaled in the Coneflower world! They are vibrant and free-flowering for months, from mid-summer until the first frost. These bright landing pads have matching raised, spikey centers that offer plenty of nectar and pollen for pollinators! Snip fading blooms to encourage rebloom!
Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9, Echinacea once it is established, becomes drought, deer and rabbit resistant and will bring you years of pleasure! Growing only 2 feet high and wide, but covers itself in lightly scented daisy-like flowers for months on end.
Planting and Application:
Plant Sombrero® Baja Burgundy anywhere in the sun! It is compact and great in any size landscape or container garden! Perfect for adding bright color to mixed Perennial borders, spicing up Meadows and Wildflower gardens, and adding food sources to Pollinator gardens and Wildlife gardens! They of course mix and match beautifully with other Coneflower and even Sombrero® series Coneflowers!
Coneflowers are low-water usage plants once established and tolerate poor soil and Xeric sites. That means Rock Gardens, that hell strip along the road or sidewalk, along driveways, and en masse in hot, sun-drenched drifts throughout the landscape! They are even great for including in your Fire-Wise landscaping design.
Baja Burgundy is one of the best fresh-cut flowers on the market and are must-haves for the Cutting Garden! On the other hand, songbirds love the high central cones and if you let the flowers dry on the plant they will animate your winter garden as much as they did the summer garden.
- Rich Pinkish Burgundy-Red Flowers
- Great Cut Flowers & Attracts Birds & Butterflies
- Winter Interest & Wildlife Food Source
- Hardy and Xeric Perennial Cultivars
- Containers, Sun Gardens, Fire-Wise & Xeric Specimens
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Coneflowers in full sun and average soil and it will pop with bright blooms all season! The blooms return profusely and have stronger stems. Needing well-drained soil, these Coneflowers become very drought tolerant once established, even tolerating clay soils, just as long as they drain. Use Nature Hills Root Booster when planting to give your plants the micronutrients and beneficial soil amendments they need.
During the first season, please pay close attention to watering. Once these herbaceous Perennials' deep roots are well-established in your soil, Sombrero® Coneflowers become waterwise. But you'll get more blooms over the growing season with a regular schedule of supplemental water, especially in containers. Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch to help protect plants in the harshest locations.
Deadhead the blooms after they are fully open for indoor flower arrangements. You'll encourage a new flush of blooms with this quick task, and decorate your home at the same time. Leave the last blooms of the season standing to give you some much-needed winter interest. They'll develop their beautiful seed heads that help feed local songbirds. In early spring, remove the spent flowers to within an inch of the ground.
- Full Sun Perennial
- Most Well-Drained Soil & Clay Soil Tolerant
- Moderate to Low - Drought & Heat Tolerant
- Deadhead For Rebloom & Prune Early Spring
- Deer Resistant, Drought & Heat Tolerant
