Hardy, Ornamental Plum Tree

Native American Plum is a deciduous, single trunk tree or multi-stemmed shrub. Nature Hills Native American Plum is sold as the multi-stemmed form and would work well in your yard as a specimen planting or used in a small hedge. As a shrub, it suckers freely and can form large colonies. It's adaptive to a variety of location and soil conditions and is even drought-tolerant.

Your Native American Plum tree is also known as the Native Plum, Hedge Plum, Sloe or Wild Plum. This variety is usually grown for ornamental value and not for fruit production, although the fruit can be used if you desire.

Clusters of 5-petaled, white flowers appear in spring. Toothed, oblong leaves fill out your tree for summer, quickly followed by the 1-inch, red plums that ripen in early in the season.

The plum flesh is yellow and although suitable for eating raw, is best used in preserves and jellies. Of course if you choose to leave the fruit on your tree, your wildlife is sure to make use of it.

In autumn the leaves turn yellow to red for great fall color. Branches and twigs are an attractive dark reddish-brown, so even through the winter months there is a decorative quality to your Plum tree.

If you'd like a tree for your yard that requires little care yet is lovely to behold (and provides a tasty harvest), then Native American Plum is for you.

Growing up at the very edge of a small Minnesota farm town, my siblings and I frequently harvested plums from the wild native trees across the road. Mother made plum jam from them but we also ate them raw as we picked them, and found them very tasty. I recently bought a couple of what I hope are the same trees from Gurneys(theyre winter hardy to zone 4). Tasting them again would bring back wonderful memories.

Dear Holly,

Thank you so much for sharing the heartfelt memories behind your Native American Plum trees! It’s truly wonderful how gardening can reconnect us to cherished moments from the past. Your story about picking wild plums and savoring them fresh or as simply delicious jam captures just why the Native American Plum is such a special plant.

Since you’re hoping to bring back those exact flavors and nostalgic taste, keep in mind that cold-hardy cultivars for zone 4 like those from Gurneys are best suited for your environment. To help ensure success, we recommend planting in well-drained soil and in a sunny location to stimulate vigorous growth and quality fruit. Additionally, proper winter protection with mulch around the base can boost hardiness. You might also enjoy exploring plum jam recipes online if you want to recreate your mother’s sweet treats!

Please feel free to reach out if you’d like additional tips on care or harvesting, or suggestions for companion plants to complement your native tree apples.

Wishing you happy planting,
