claim-jumper-golden-katsura
Claim Jumper™ Golden Katsura

Claim Jumper™ Golden Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'HSI1') is a golden-leaved katsura tree whose heart-shaped leaves open yellow with a pink blush, glow bright gold all summer, and take on a copper tint in fall. It grows about 20 to 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide, and it is hardy in zones 4 through 8.

The leaves carry the show from spring to leaf drop. New growth emerges yellow blushed with pink, settles into golden yellow as it matures, and picks up a coppery glow in autumn that deepens until the leaves fall. In winter the fine branching makes a clean silhouette against the sky. Katsura leaves are also known for a sweet, burnt-sugar scent as they drop and dry.

Its broad, upright shape suits a front yard specimen, a lawn tree, or a mixed border backed by dark evergreens that make the gold stand out. At 20 to 30 feet, it fits most suburban yards where a full-size katsura would not.

Plant it in full sun for the brightest gold, with some shade from hot afternoon sun in warmer zones, since heat, drought and dry wind can scorch the leaves. It wants moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic to neutral, and it needs steady water while it gets established. Mulch the root zone and water deeply during dry spells.

Add Claim Jumper™ Golden Katsura to your cart for golden foliage from spring through fall.
