If you are looking for a standout in your landscape, select Red Prince Weigela (Weigela florida 'Red Prince'). It's a deciduous shrub with repeat blooms. If you have a spot in your yard where a bold statement is called for, then this is the shrub for you. This is the variety that changed the game for Weigelas. A real breakthrough, the phenomenal number of red flowers on this shrub in late spring is truly astounding.

Red Prince Weigela shrub will provide a wonderful show for your yard not once, but twice a year! In late spring, 1.5-inch, trumpet-shaped flowers of radiant red will literally cover your Red Prince with their brilliance. The tubular, red flowers are the perfect way to attract butterflies to your yard. The hummingbirds have a heyday when it flowers with bright colors and delicious nectar.

When summer begins to wane, your Red Prince Weigela will once again burst into color for yet another magnificent show of scarlet intensity. Then, later on in the season on the new growth, you will see another very substantial round of blooms taking the plant right into fall. This Weigela is a real champion when it comes to making blooms.

The blooms last for weeks, never fading as many other flowers do and even rebloom later in the season. They maintain their natural radiance for the life of each blossom. Oblong, 4.5-inch green leaves provide a lush appearance for your Weigela, a delightful accent to the bright flowers, and a lovely presentation even when not in bloom.

Planting and Application:

Many people mistake this woody deciduous shrub for an Azalea or Rhododendron during the first round of spring flowers. In bloom, the plant actually looks red, and the green foliage doesn't register much, if at all. A real show-stopper in the landscape!

Red Prince would make an outstanding shrub border along the side of your house. They'll also make the perfect untrimmed hedge to screen your patio from a neighbor. Perfect for a Pollinator Garden, this hardworking shrub grows into a naturally rounded shape. No matter where you use them, you'll be adding tons of color!

Use them as a colorful anchor in sunny, mixed garden borders. Picture a staggered row along the back of your perennial garden with screaming red flowers as the backdrop to your favorite perennials. These long-lasting flowers make a splash as cut flowers in bouquets. Brilliant!

Don't forget Weigela does attract Hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees to its color and delicious nectar. This makes a colorful and carefree shrub, providing tremendous amounts of color and vibrant life to your landscape.

Try Red Prince as a modern take on foundation planting. You could also plant just one as a specimen plant near your front door, where its sporadic bloom will be a delight all summer long!

  • Double Blooms Are Extra Full of White & Pink Petals
  • Soft Green Strappy Leaves
  • Elegant Vase Shape
  • Gorgeous Bouquets & Pollinator Friendly
  • Beds & Borders, Edging, Groupings & Indoor Forcing

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant in most any soil as long as it is well drained. A sunnier location will allow the most flowers. Red Prince has no significant disease or insect issues and is hardy in a wide area. Weigela roots prefer well-drained soil and supply a moderate amount of supplemental water if you don't get enough rain. It takes off like a pretty, colorful rocket in well-drained soil and a moderate amount of water. It doesn't have any significant disease or pest problems, so you can be assured of an easy-to-care-for plant. Best of all between the brilliant flowers and picturesque foliage, the beautiful Proven Winners® shrub gives season-long color. Provide a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over the root system.

Red Prince blooms best in June on last year's stems, so don't prune your plant until the first spring flush of blooms is finished. Far better to plan to give it enough room to spread out into its fluffy, mature height and width so you won't have to prune it. Renew older plants by removing a third of the oldest, fattest stems all the way down to the ground. Leave the younger, thinner branches for the best bloom and a more natural form. Either way, you'll enjoy a sporadic rebloom later each summer or fall too!

  • Full Sun Blooming Shrubs
