Look out Hydrangea and Lilac bushes! There's a new favorite in town! Tor Spirea (Spiraea betulifolia 'Tor'), sometimes called Birchleaf Spirea, is here and positively charming the locals with its multiseasonal interest! This deciduous shrub fills out into a neat, low-to-the-ground, mounded form. That, along with the dark green of the leaves, makes the perfect setup to adequately showcase the petite tiny white flowers, that sprout and cover Tor Spirea in the early summer.
Tired of having bushes that only show off for a couple of weeks every year? We totally get it, that's why you'll want a Tor Spirea to your landscape. Its beauty starts in the spring with an abundance of dark green foliage sprouting from its branches.
Include in foundation plantings against the siding of your house or as a border for your garden. Its compact growth habit makes it ideal for hedges!
Of course, you'll have to be willing to share that beauty with your local pollinators. Spirea bushes are known to be a butterfly favorite and Tor Spirea is no exception. Butterflies and their splashy wings will simply add to the shrub's colorful nature!
As the weather cools and the crisp breezes of fall roll in, Tor Spirea pulls yet another trick out of its sleeve. The lovely foliage changes from deep green to an exciting orange streaked with red and purple.
While other shrubs are settling in for the winter, Tor Spirea is still showing off in all its glory. Neighbors are going to wish they too had a bush with half as much fall color!
This shrub, loved by you, your neighbors, and the local pollinators, won't stay available for long. Order one for your landscape from our expert growers at Nature Hills Nursery today!
How to Use Tor Spirea in the Landscape
Even experienced gardeners will tell you they have a hard time picking just one way to use this in their garden. Tor Spirea's low-growing compact form makes it a great addition in a multitude of different ways.
You can plant a couple in a row to create an informal-looking hedge for loose borders. Plus since the deer seem to leave this specimen alone, for the most part, you won't have to worry about it getting munched on!
One of its more popular uses is to plant along the sides of your house. Tor Spirea is well known for being a fantastic foundational plant because of its low maintenance and carefree needs.
Perennial beds could even benefit from a Tor Spirea. Either plant in the garden as an accent, or line the garden and give it an unassuming border that'll keep the color coming until winter!
If you're looking to make a statement, try pairing with shrubs roughly the same size to create a mixed shrub border. Double Play Big Bang® would contrast nicely and draw the eyes of jealous onlookers!
Large patio planters and Rock gardens are other areas Tor Spirea shines. Plant one and each fall the foliage will seemingly shine brighter against the rocks!
#ProPlantTips for Care
Another reason Tor Spirea is beloved by so many is its low-maintenance nature!
Simply plant somewhere in full sun as it likes to bask in the rays for hours during the day. Well-drained soils are preferred along with medium moisture, however, Tor Spirea isn't extremely picky about its soil.
You'll want to water young shrubs regularly during the first season. Their roots are getting established in your soil. Add Nature Hills Root Booster and a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch over the entire root zone to hold in moisture more consistently.
This Spirea flowers on new wood. This means you'll want to prune in late winter to early spring, and deadhead/shear the plant immediately after its flowers fade.
Extend the curb appeal of your garden into the fall for three full seasons of interest by planting a Tor Spirea. Order one today!
