  • Macy's Pride - an easy rose to grow!

If you are new to gardening and love roses, this is the rose for you! The Macy's Pride is named after, you guessed it, "Macy's Department Store" and was used for their centennial. And not to be forgotten, they won the New England Rose Society Award in 2002. What's not to like about...

  • Re: Trying to beautify

Hi Kym, and welcome to our community. Your question is one that has been asked so many times as the public really would like a black rose. Unfortunately that rose has not been bred yet. Maybe someday but not yet. I don't even know of a dark purple one that is close to the color black.

  • Re: Do all roses have thorns?

I realize this question was already answered, but I wanted to point out one of my favorite roses known as the "Rosa Rugosa". This rose has tons of prickly thorns! The stems are full of tiny thorns making it a hassle sometimes to pick up trimmings. For that, I suggest purchasing leather garden...

  • Rose Care

My roses are about to bloom and by this time next week they will be in their glory. As a rose lover, I think this is the very best time of the year. My garden is home to about fifty rose bushes, all of which are planted in beds of mixed annuals, perennials and shrubs. They are grown organically and almost...

  • Is Spring Almost Here?

If you live in Nebraska you will know what I mean when I say we have had many false starts to spring this year. Our tulips and daylilies are about the only plants that have decided to peek through the soil so far. We did get a chance to mulch the beds last week in between cold rain and snow showers....

  • Rugosa Roses

If you are looking for a carefree hedge rose that will take poor soil conditions, your search stops at the Rugosa Rose. Versatility describes this plant; it prefers well drained soils but tolerates almost all conditions except soggy soils. It will thrive in sandy and salty soils also. They are a fast...

  • Short Season Gardens Can Be Just As Colorful

The further north you go the shorter the growing seasons in the USA. Just because you live in Zone 4 or lower that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice color. There are some great choices in all types of plantings. For starters, if you are seeking a colorful tree for your yard a crabapple 'Malus...

  • My Rose Bush Hasn't Bloomed!

In my opinion, every perennial bed should have at least a couple of rose bushes to add texture and beauty. Sounds simple enough; purchase a couple of rose bushes and plant them and wait for those beautiful blooms. Those blooms never appear but the plant looks vibrant and healthy. Why no blooms? If you...

  • What can I do about black spot on my roses?

Calls about black spot seem to pick up toward July and August of each year. The optimal environment conditions for black spot development occur in 75 degree weather and damp or moist rose leaves. The fungus that causes the black spots is Diplocarpon rosae. But knowing what it is does not address your...
