I had a landscaper add rocks and mulch around the base of my maple tree. I have fun with my "container flower garden", and I like having the freedom of experimenting with different shade plants each year. Some of the plants that I use are impatiens, hosta, astilbe, potao vines, and coral bells. I planted a few tough groundcover plants of Snow on the Mountain Bishop Weed right in the ground, and they are filling in the space nicely. Since I use containers, I have the liberty of arranging the flowers and making changes as I wish.

Maple Tree and Colorful Container Plants
<media:text type="html">

Maple Tree and Colorful Container Plants
What do you do about the space under a tree where no grass or plants will grow? It is a shady area, but this year I decided to add some nasturtiums. What surprisingly easy plants to grow, and they did so well in the shade! I planted them (from seed) in a container in the spring after the last frost, and after they were about 6-8 inches tall, I carefully transplanted them to my large pot. The bright orange color added a new look to my arrangement. I was so delighted with these plants that I started using them for edging and borders too. The flowers are edible and can be used in salads.

Colorful Container Plants
<media:text type="html">

Colorful Container Plants
In the front of my house by the garage, I have always planted impatiens in my large containers for color, along with some spike plants for height and contrast. What I do like about this plant are the bright reddish/orange berries it produces. These berries keep the birds coming to my yard! I had to tie this bittersweet to a trellis using strips of nylon from old panty hose. Worked great.</media:text>

<media:category>berries bittersweet colorful easy care flowers perennia small flowers trellis vines </media:category>

Grasses and Diablos

Grasses and Diablos
Three years ago we planted a row of Ninebark Diablos for a privacy hedge. This fall I will cut back the grasses until they are about four inches tall. Next year I hope to have them come back even thicker and taller. This plant is great for the beginner gardener! It lets you divide it, transplant it , and all it needs is a little tender loving care. The only attention mine ever get is a little watering and mulching throughout the summer. This plant gives you a feeling of gardening success with little effort. It is October in the Midwest and I still enjoy this colorful sedum in my yard, and also as flower arrangements throughout my home. When the Autumn Joy die off after the first hard freeze, I just cut the stalks to the ground and wait for them to appear again in spring!

Autumn Joy Sedum -- What a Fall Flower!
<media:text type="html">

Autumn Joy Sedum -- What a Fall Flower!
The Autumn Joy Sedum can give you that lasting color in the fall when all other plants lose their luster.
