curled and dying leaves on dogwood :O(

Help, I think, my dogwood is dying, it has curled  and dying leaves.  we live in kansas and the winds are horrible plus over the past week or so we have had 10 inches of rain. not sure what to do to help my little tree.  we planted it in the front yard.  we put mulch on top of it and tie downs to keep it from blowing away. any help would be appreciated!  I will post photos in the gardening photos spot.  It has been planted about 3 months. full sun in the middle of our front yard.

thanking you all in  advance for any help!

Hello, and welcome to our community. Sounds like to much rain. The tree should respond once the soil drys a bit.

Thanks so much for replying.  sadly it died. Home Depot took it back. All the other trees they had looked bad, too. So we bought one from our hometown farm center.

Now we have an ornamental bradford pear that Loves full sun. It is a little bit "knarled up" from being so late in the season, but I am hoping this one will pull thru,

we are in east central ks and the rain has been just crazy!  Hope this one does better!  Thanks again for responding!

Re: Moving a dogwood with curled & drying leaves?

My newly planted dogwood tree also has curled leaves -- it has been in the ground about 7 weeks.  I'm guessing it has had too much rain as you suggest, since it's been very rainy.  Should I dig it up & plant it somewhere that isn't so wet or should I leave it?  Our summers are usually dry, but I have planted it where it does stay quite moist after rain.  Thanks for your help!

Roxette, dogwoods prefer moist soils and thrive in them. I'm wondering if your soils would be considered wet versus moist. If the rain ever ceases this spring for many people the dogwood should perk up. The gamble is when the rains will start to taper off. If you have water standing where the dogwood is planted I might consider moving it. If the soil is moist not wet, I would leave the tree where it is and wait out all the excessive moisture.

    Hi Roxette,

This has been our rainiest season for years, that didn't help my poor curled up dogwood, plus I think I actually helped kill mine.  I planted him in the full sun, too..... yes, I did.  I am a new gardener and I was just so happy to finally get a dogwood I didn't pay attention to the tag til after he  died.  My dogwood wanted to be moist not soaking wet, like our weather was, and most important of all, my dogwood wanted shade.  our front yard was in complete sun.  It seemed like it rained here every day, but when it wasn't raining it was baking hot. Kansas weather.  So unfortunately, my poor dogwood didn't have a chance.  If you have planted yours in a partial shady place and it is the pink one that is the one that needs the shade, hopefully it will come out of it. I have learned so much!

We have a Bradford Pear, now, ornamental, that LOVES the sun.  he is doing great. loves the sun, and doesn't seem to mind all this ridiculas rain we keep having.  Good luck with your dogwood.  They are so beautiful.  Hang in there this is the best site for information on any and all plant needs!

    Debbie
