The squirrels are probably throwing them on the ground after one bite because they don't like them.  Squirrels favorite foods consist of nuts and seeds.  Most people enjoy the site of squirrels scurrying up and down their trees and adding life to the landscape.  If you don't want them to keep ripping off your buds, perhaps you should try the best alternative which is subsitution of course!  They're hungry little creatures, if you set out something in your tree for them to munch on, they'll leave your buds alone.  I have always put out an entire ear of dried corn for them to eat.  Other suggestions can be found at your local pet store.
