    Optimizing Pollination?

I recently bought a Honey Crisp apple tree to add to a small orchard, not realizing it was self sterile. So now I'm getting a Dolgo Crabapple to pollinate it. Here's my question: How far apart is too far apart for pollination purposes, and how close is too close for when they are mature? I want to make sure to optimize pollination without crowding. Thank you!

    Re: Optimizing Pollination?

If your Honeycrisp apple tree is semi-dwarf you can expect the tree to reach a height of 12 - 16 feet with a spread of 12 - 14 feet. The Dolgo can reach heights of 20 - 25 feet and a spread of 20 feet. So you will need to keep those distances in mind when planting.

As for planting distances regarding pollination you should plant your crabapple or another apple tree 50 yards or less to one another. Here is a link to a prior post on just that subject. Click on this post on the same subject: planting honeycrisp apple tree

I hope I have been able to help you out with your questions. Honeycrisp is my favorite apple. I posted this last year: Honeycrisp Apples. I'm sure you will enjoy your Honeycrisp as much as I enjoy mine.

    Happy Gardening!

You were most helpful, jeff! Thank you muchly! I hear wonderful things about the Honeycrisp, so I am very much looking forward to the first harvest, even though I understand it will be a few years. :) Thank you for your reply... I'm off to plot and plant.
