Take the non-flowering, leafy stems of the season's new growth during summer - 30cms long is good. From the bottom, strip all but four leaves off and pinch out the leaf bud at the end. Apply root hormone / anti-fungal agent if you want to improve results.

Bury firmly into the soil - prepare a trench of loose, sandy or leaf mould rich soil earth to improve your results. Leave it alone for a year, watering during dry spells, and you will have a free privet hedge on the way.

Tip: Remove any failed cuttings when they appear and grow some spares in pots to easily transplant into the gaps.
