Even
though annuals look wonderful by themselves, they also have a lot to offer in
groups with other plants. When annuals are planted in borders where your
perennials dominate, you can use them as a formal or informal edging.
While
your perennials come in and out of bloom, the annuals will add consistent color
through most of the season. To link your garden and make a smooth transition
with the eye, repeat the same annual along borders in the front yard as well as
the back. This will create an excellent and colorful aesthetic
picture.
Usually when you have new tree or shrub plantings there may be empty
space until they mature. For a temporary fix, plant low-growing annuals for a
ground cover. Ones that are low and spreading are alyssum or
lobelia.
Add
excitement to your beds of low annuals by including a taller focal point, such
as a fuchsia or penta plant. These taller plants will give a dramatic accent
and draw the eye up to the taller plants.
