Pear Rootstock

Following are some pear rootstocks with some defining characteristics of each.

Winter Nellis/Domestic Pear Seedling Rootstock: This rootstock is vigorous and relatively tolerant of wet soils. It is resistant to oak-root fungus and pear decline. Trees on Winter Nellis produce pear tree with heights of of 15 to 25 feet. Pear seedlings may be held to any desired height by summer pruning.

OHXF 97 Rootstock: OHXF is vigorous, widely adapted and disease resistant. It is used on European, Asian, and flowering pears. Unpruned tree height of fruiting varieties reach 15 to 25 feet. Trees on OHXF 97 may be held to any desired height by summer pruning.

OHXF 333 Rootstock: European and Asian pears on OHXF 333 are dwarfed to about 2/3 size of standard, or about 12 to 18 feet, if not pruned. This rootstock is widely adapted and disease resistant. Trees on OHXF 333 may be held to any desired height by summer pruning.

Betulaefolia Rootstock: This rootstock is used on Asian and flowering pears. It is tolerant of of wet soil, dry soil, alkaline soil, and is resistant to pear decline.Betulaefolia rootstock is more vigorous and more winter hardy than Calleryana rootstock. Unpruned tree height of Asian pears is 15 to 25 feet. Trees on Betulaefolia rootstock may be held to any desired height by summer pruning.

Calleryana Rootstock: This rootstock is used on Asian and flowering pears, especially in warm winter and hot summer climates. It is used in both sandy or heavy soils. Asian pears on Calleryana reach about 15 to 20 feet tall, if unpruned. Asian pear trees on Calleryana may be held to any desired height by summer pruning.
