If I cannot locate a certain plant that I want,
I usually find a mail-order or online nursery that does carry it. Most of these companies
do a good job of guaranteeing a healthy plant and add directions on how to plant
it.
When you are ready to plant, and just before
planting your newly purchased plant, always water it while it is in the
container so that the potting soil adheres to the plant. Make sure you have
picked the right location in your yard for the plant, such as, full sun, shade,
or partial shade. Example, a hosta placed in full sun would not perform very well.
After digging the hole, remove the plant from
the container, spread the roots a little, and then place the plant, dirt and all
into the hole. It should be as deep as the soil line in the container, and then
fill the rest of the hole with gardening soil.
Press down the surrounding soil so that is it
firmly in place. Water it gently until it is soaked. I always keep a record of
the name of the plant and its location. This comes in handy for future
