Is Container Selection Important?

Choosing a container is as important as the plant you intend to place in it. I have to admit, sometimes my wife and I like a containers looks so much that we overlook what it is constructed of. At times that can be an issue if you bought a container for a specific plant and then you realize that because of the material used in the containers construction heats up quickly in the sun and damages the roots of the plant.

Plastic or metal containers while they can really be stunning they heat up very quickly in our hot Nebraska summers and can actually damage root systems of the plants in them. You may have encountered this problem and there is nothing you can do about it other that replant into a different planter such as Terra cotta or resin planter. We are extremely fond of glazed pottery as it is so colorful but you have to be so careful as it can chip or break very easily. Plus, you need to make sure you bring it in during cold winters as it will crack in freezing weather.

With so many container choices or ones that you can recycle out of milk cans, wagons etc. please keep in mind of where you are placing it and what plants are being displayed in them.
