Lighten up a shady area with the ‘American Sweetheart’ Hosta

Hosta American Sweetheart

The ‘American Sweetheart’ Hosta is a Designer Hosta that is definitely a real sweetheart for a shady corner.  The leaves have wide green margins with a white center; leaf center changes from creamy yellow in spring to white in summer.

‘American Sweetheart’ is a sport of Hosta 'Sea Thunder', but this tetraploid (sterile plant) version has a much wider green margin and much thicker leaves.   Blooming in August, this hosta has lovely lavender flowers with a white throat, and they tower above this clump and reach 4-5 feet in height.

This perennial grows best in moist, well-drained, highly organic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5.  Sandy loam is better than clay because it provides more aeration for the roots.  High-filtered or dappled sunlight is necessary for clean, healthy growth.  Morning sun is tolerable and will help to intensify the leaf colors, but hot afternoon sun is usually deadly to hostas.
