With
its true blue flowers, Spiderwort Blue Denim will provide a long-blooming
flowering period. Each 1-2" wide, 3-petaled flower only lasts for one day, but
the plants have lots of buds, extending the bloom time up to eight weeks! It
will produce flowers from early June right until fall, if treated
properly.
This
Spiderwort does not need much special care once established, but must be planted
in full sun. Water often so it does not dry out, and if this does happen,
simply cut it back by half and it will have new growth and flowers by fall.
Deadheading is not necessary since the flowers are self-cleaning, but
deadheading after the first flowering will prolong its blooming time. The clean
grey-green foliage looks great all summer long, unlike many other varieties
which need to be cut back by early summer. The perennial Blue Denim has a nice clumping
habit that usually does not need to be staked.
This
Blue Denim Spiderwort can be grown in zones 3-9, and if you are a blue lover,
you will discover that this plant is one of the longest bloomers of blue flowers
in the garden! The common name Spiderwort may have come from the way the
flowers hang like spiders from a web off the main stem, and "wort" is the Saxon
name for ‘plant’.
