Maintenance For Ornamental Grasses

Whether it is feather read grass or pampas grass, ornamental grasses can provide a great look to your garden.  There are several options to choose from, offering a wide range of colors and sizes.  They can be used as an accent, or as the main focal point in your landscape.

Spring will be the best time for planting.  When transplanting, make sure to plant your grass so that the soil is up to the base of the crown.  Remember to water the grass in well, and to keep it well watered (without over watering) until it is well established.  This will ensure that your grass gets a good start.

Once the grass is established, you will want to maintain the proper amount of water.  Grasses that are accustom to warmer climates will probably get by with less water, but you should keep cooler climate grasses well hydated.  This will help regulate the temperature of the soil, keeping it cool.  Grasses don't need much in the way of fertilization and they don't do will in heavy nitrogen.  At the end of the year, cut them back within a few inches of the ground.
