Anemone tubers are windflowers that are one of the earlier harbingers of
spring. The foliage is deeply cut and fern-like. Plants will self-sow and the
seedlings will bloom the second year. Soak the tubers in tepid water for about
12 hours before planting to promote early sprouting.
Anemone is a fall planted tuber that is easily grown in average, medium,
well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Although called windflowers,
these plants will do best if sheltered from the wind. During the growing season
they need to be kept moist. Anemones grow well in Southern
climates.
Two of
the species of Anemone are: Anemone blanda and Anemone coronaria and are native
to the Mediterranean region.
--Anemone coronaria is a Poppy anemone; bulbs bloom for two to three
weeks in late spring in zones 7 to 10, where they are winter-hardy. They can be
planted in the spring for bloom throughout the summer in colder areas. The
poppy-like flowers are red, blue, or white. These bulbs are great in flower
borders or grown in containers. They are an excellent cut flower.
--Anemone blanda are spring-blooming bulbs that have daisy-like flowers
in blue, purple, pink, or white. The foliage is fern-like. The plant grows three
to nine inches tall and has a spread of three to six inches. These bulbs are an
excellent source of early spring color in a woodland garden, perennial border,
or rock garden.
Anemone 'de Caen' (coronaria) is a fall planted tuber that produces a
delightful combination of mixed colors such as bright red, blue, white and
lavender flowers with black centers and bold markings. If If they are planted
close together they will make an excellent ground cover. When left in the
ground to perennialize, they form magnificent flower carpets.
Anemone Mixed (blanda) is a fall planted tuber that produces spectacular
mixture of dainty daisy-like flowers in deep blue, light blue, white, pink and
cerise flowers, with yellow centers. This Anemone will flower for 4 to 6 weeks
in early to mid-spring.
