Tree peonies such as the Tayio can be grown in containers and some are shipped as bareroot plants. Planting containerized tree peonies simply requires the removal from the pot and planted at the same depth as they were grown in the pots. Container plants that are planted early in the growing season have a longer period of time to establish themselves in the new location and get a larger root system established before frost and freezing weather.
On bareroot plantings, the root system needs to be planted deeply so the roots develop more rapidly and abundantly. Tree peonies are grafted, (stem of the plant is grafted to the root system) so inspect the roots of the plant carefully. The graft union, where the root stock and the stem are joined, should be planted about 5 to 6 inches deep. Graft sites need to be planted deeply so the plant can eventually develop its own root system and no longer be dependent on the grafted root. Be sure to mulch 4 to 6 inches deep in the winter to help protect the root system.
There are also tree peonies that can be raised from bulbs or eyes, such as the yoshino gawa or the kinshe tree peony. Peony bulbs can be planted and raised just as other bulbs.
