Fortunately, ornamental grass growers will not be over burdened with maintenance work. In most cases, grasses are very easy to care for and maintain and they are relatively disease and pest free. Probably one of the first points to make with grass care is to avoid over fertilizing them. Too much fertilizer promotes excessive growth which then becomes unmanageable. Over fertilization will also cause the growth to be soft and they will lose the ability to stay erect. One notable exception is gold hakone. Gold hakone prefers a rich soil and will benefit from good fertility.
Early spring is the time to cut down the dead growth from the previous season. Some ornamental grasses may require a pruning saw or electric hedge trimmer because the grass blades are so hard and dense. Cut the large clumps of grass about 6 inches above the ground. With the smaller grasses or smaller clumps, cut about 2 inches above the ground.
This may or may not fall into the maintenance category, but some grasses are very vigorous growers and can spread quite quickly. If you have a small area and plant a grass such a ribbon grass, you may be constantly trying to stop it from spreading to other areas in your garden. So be aware of the extra effort the very vigorous grasses can create. A very manageable grass would be blue fescue, (Festuca Glauca 'Pepindale Blue' ).
