Common Questions Answered

Where is the best location for a vegetable garden in my backyard?

Asparagus 'Mary Washington'

Your question goes right to the heart of being a successful gardener. Location, location, location! Success is based upon the location and the soil in your garden area. At least 8 hours of sun is preferred for the site of a vegetable garden. The availability of sun is crucial to good producing vegetables. The next subject to consider is the soil. The area should be well drained and not boggy or compacted. If the area is boggy or not well drained, move the location or raise the area by adding additional soil. If the soil is compacted, till the area to 6 to 8 inches deep.

If you think your soil could use some more organic matter, add compost to the soil while you are tilling. Adding compost every year is always beneficial. A third consideration for your gardens location would be the availability of a water source. If you have to transport water a long distance, you might skip a vital watering due to the energy it takes to carry water. Gardens need to be watered weekly if no rain is received. Good luck with your new garden.
