My First Garden

Every year, I rely on people who over-plant vegetables in their garden to dish out their excess crop to fulfill my craving for homegrown vegetables (and fruits if that is how you classify tomatoes, but I am not going to get into that issue).  Although I have helped some in gardens before, mainly helping my mom growing up, I have not attempted to start and up keep my own garden.  Since I often was getting handouts, I figured there was no need for me to put all the time and effort in.  That is, until now.  I decided that it is time to stop being lazy and time to get my hands dirty.  My fiancĂ© laughed at me, so she may not be getting any of crops if this pans out.  Oh she of little faith.

I think to start out with, I am going to try my hand at growing vegetables.  If all goes well, I may start working on flower bulbs, etc.  Currently I am renting and I really don't want to spend a lot time sprucing up a yard that I don't own (no offense to my landlord).  I decided that I could at least reap the benefits of an organic vegetable garden, that is if I have any luck on my maiden voyage.  I am in the planning stage now.  That is about all I can do while the temperatures keep dipping below 20 and there is still several inches of snow on the grown.

I know that I am going to put it in my back yard.  There is a spot that gets full sun that sits next to a fence (if you can call it that).  There were some roses and a vine in there before.  They had been neglected and were beyond help when I moved in (not that I would have been much help anyways).  I don't know how green my thumb really is (or isn't) because I haven't had much experience.  We shall soon see.  I do know that I will have to do a lot of prep work to get the area ready, but I am up for the challenge.  The nice part is that I mentioned it to my neighbor and he even offered to help with some of the labor (in exchange for some food, of course).  I do have a lot of rabbits and squirrels to contend with, so I will have to keep them in mind when it gets a little closer.  I will keep everyone posted, so there will be definitely be more to come.  Hopefully some pictures, too if all goes well.  And as far as my fiancĂ© goes, we will see who has the last laugh.
