Blooms on the Rose of Sharon

Rose of sharon plants are very popular and there are a lot of varieties to choose from.  They have beautiful blooms, when they bloom.  But what if your rose of sharon is not blooming?  What can you do to make sure that you can enjoy the flowers on this plant?  Growing conditions and pruning are two common factors that may interfere with the blooms on the rose of sharon.

Rose of Sharon Helene "Hibiscus syriacus 'Helene'"

Plants are largely effected by growing conditions.  Soil types, soil moisture, and sunlight play a huge role in how plants grow.  These conditions can also improve, or hinder, the performance of the plant (whether it is flowering, fruit production, etc.).   Growing conditions can be a factor as to why your rose of sharon is not blooming.  Rose of sharon plants are adaptable to different soil types, but they don't like soil that is too wet or too dry.  Carefully monitoring the water might help with the blooming of these plants.  Sunlight is also important.  Rose of sharon plants like warm temperatures.  Generally, full sun all day is recommended (in some cases you can get by with full sun for half of the day).

Rose of Sharon Pink Giant "Hibiscus syriacus 'Pink Giant'"

Another factor that can stop the rose of sharon from blooming is pruning.  If pruning is done at the wrong time, then this can prevent the rose of sharon from flowering.  It is recommended to prune in the early spring before any growth occurs.  In this situation, you may want to check with your local county extension agency to find out when exactly the best time would be for your local area.  They are also a good resource to check in case the problem with the flowering is more complex.
