The Art of Shipping

We get a lot of questions in regards to shipping.  I thought I would share a little of the method to our madness.  We try to ship items at the appropriate time for planting for each zone.  This can be a little tricky because we not only have to watch the weather where the items is going, but we also have to account for the weather where we are shipping from.  Our warehouses are in Nebraska (zone 5).  This can cause issues when we ship to warmer places to in the south during the fall and winter months.  The temperature here has to be at least 20 degrees, otherwise the plants will freeze in the shipping process (which kills the plant).  Our winters can get very cold, so that can delay the shipping of products.

There are certain items that we can sucessfully send in the winter months, and there are others that we are not able to ship until the spring.  With the items that are available in the winter, we will ship to zones 7 through 10.  We start shipping to zones 3 through 6 in the spring.  Once the weather starts to warm up and the ground thaws, we can begin our spring shipping.  This usually starts in the late part of March.  Orders begin to ship to be received in April.  We will start with the warmer zones first so they can get there items before it becomes too warm to plant.  This also gives the cooler zones a little more time to thaw before the items are shipped.  We will continue to ship items until it becomes too hot to plant and will resume again in the fall.  For our bare root items, they are uprooted when the plants go dormant.  This takes place in November.  They begin shipping between the mid to late November.
