Need a versatile broadleaf evergreen with lush green foliage? The Sarcoxie Wintercreeper Euonymus Vine (Euonymus fortunei 'Sarcoxie') is an evergreen vine with very lush green foliage! More upright than most Euonymus, and not as much of a sprawling spreader, Sarcoxie can be trained to be low-growing or more upright in form.
Also known as a Wintercreeper Euonymus, your Sarcoxie Euonymus is an evergreen that loves to form upright mounds. As a broadleaf evergreen, it provides wonderful, year-round color! Each glossy, oval leaf is dark green, which is sure to add some ornamental definition to your yard.
In spring, the fizzy sprays of green flowers may not be the showiest, but fat bees and jeweled butterflies will seek them out in droves! In the fall, your Sarcoxie will grace your landscape with the addition of showy, shell-pink seed capsules for that extra dash of color before the drabness of winter sets in! Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 9, there's little that fazes this vigorous plant!
Planting and Application:
This extremely versatile plant can be trained to climb your lamppost, fence, or outbuilding, or even trained to grow into an accent shrub for your front yard!
Sarcoxie Euonymus can be a multi-stemmed evergreen shrub that will grow to whatever size you need, depending upon how you train or prune it. This Euonymus is less spreading and more upright than some of the other Wintercreeper types resembling a larger leaved Boxwood type shrub. A wonderful broadleaved evergreen for sun or part shade, the year-round greenery shines in the sun and won't mind a bit of afternoon shade in hotter climates. They can even be trained as an Espalier.
Got an ugly fence or outbuilding? Let this Wintercreeper cover it up! Any wooden or stone surface will give this creeper a foothold and it will reach 4-6 feet in height, providing vertical green coverage and hiding eyesores! Just avoid growing it near brickwork as they can root into the mortar.
- Deep Dark Green Evergreen
- Climbing Vine, Spreading Groundcover or Upright Shrub With Training
- Sprays of Green Spring Flowers & Pink Seed Capsules in Fall
- Pollinator & Bird-Friendly
- Highly Adaptable Broad-Leaf Evergreen & Hardy Workhorse
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Euonymus Wintercreeper are easy-to-grow and forgiving broadleaf evergreen plants. Provide a well-drained sunny site with regular moisture access their first year, and then after, watch them go! Once established, Sarcoxie Euonymus is drought-tolerant and can thrive in a variety of environments. It's even tolerant of pollution so you can use it even if you're in an urban environment. It can be pruned at any time, so it's especially amenable to many uses! Prune in late winter or early spring, and provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around the root system.
Annually inspect where your Euonymus is growing to ensure it's not creeping up a tree, into a shrub, or climbing something you don't want it to. Those vigorous roots can get into trouble when you aren't staying on top of it. Birds spread the seeds and in some areas, Wintercreeper Euonymus has small greenish flowers and produces small round pink or red capsules that split open to expose the red-orange seeds much like a bittersweet.
This species of plant and its cultivars may be invasive in some areas in some eastern states. Nature Hills has developed Plant Sentry™, our very own compliance software that will not allow the sale or shipment of any plant that your state has prohibited from being purchased and grown where it is restricted.
