Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Look, we could all use a little help polishing up the edges of our landscaping! These small, versatile, high-performers will help you take things to the next level!

With a tight, mounded habit, Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica 'Atropurpurea Nana') gives you an easy-care, tropical look. The marvelous chartreuse foliage is burnished with a hint of purple! Also known as Chinese Sacred Bamboo, Nandina are named for their Bamboo-like looks, but are not actually related. Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo develops fine-textured, compound leaves near the tips of individual, unbranched stems.

Butterflies love the tiny panicles of white blossoms and birds swoop in for the berries that develop among the leaves in the fall. Unfortunately, in some areas, birds spread the seeds and Nandina pops up where it should not. Enter your Zip Code in the Plant Highlights section to find your Hardiness Zone on this page and you'll see if Nature Hills can ship Nandina safely into your area.

As the nights start getting colder, this petite powerhouse turns an incredible fall color! The form is compact. The care of this disease and pest-resistant plant is blessedly easy. Give them some shade in hot climates, or plan to provide extra water. If you live in a warmer climate throughout USDA planting zones 6-9, these little shrubs grow just 2 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide!

Remaining brightly colored broadleaf evergreens and semi-evergreen in the winters of frost-free zones, chilly winters will see Nandina act as deciduous shrubs and lose their foliage in the winter.

Planting and Application:

The overall look is very energetic. A single plant will sway in the breeze, and a long row of them will ripple together in a vibrant series of waves. Consider them a living, kinetic wind sculpture. They also deliver a powerful visual impact. Each leaf might be a slightly different color, for a bit of fabulous complexity.

Use it to fire up your planting beds and containers for a brilliant display. Grow them in the ground, or add them to your outdoor containers. Dwarf Nandina looks great no matter where you place them! In containers, they'll make a wonderful study of a single species all by themselves, or use Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo as a "Thriller" in the center of mixed planters!

Heavenly Bamboo even looks great surrounding a Black Diamond Crape Myrtle or Green Mountain Boxwood Topiary. Why not go all out this season? These plants can be grown on the east side of mature evergreen trees. "Pop" that purple-tinted, red brilliance against the steady green of Pine or Arborvitae.

Line all the beds in your landscape with a ribbon of color. This design secret helps tie together the look of the entire design. Consider these as an en masse groundcover to fill bare areas with hot, wine-red color. Plant them 18 inches apart for a solid display. You should also consider adding these as perfectly poised "facer" plants to hide the bare, leggy stems of taller shrubs and Hybrid Tea Roses. Ideal for your home's foundation plantings, low hedges, mid-sized backdrops to your mixed perennial gardens, and vibrant color for your mixed shrub borders!

Nandina is a beautiful plant on many 'firescaping or firewise' plant lists. Their drought tolerance makes Nandina ideal for Rock Gardens and Xeric mass plantings! Add them to cutting gardens. You'll want to tuck that bold, multicolored foliage into your arrangements!

  • Charming, Tiny Nandina Cultivar - Resembles Bamboo
  • Acid Yellow-Green Foliage Tinged With Purple
  • Cupped, Compound Leaves Grow on Long, Non-Branching Stems
  • Incredible Ruby-Red Fall & Winter Color
  • Upright, Stiff Growth Habit Looks Formal
  • Low Hedges, Edging & Facer Plants, Mass Plantings & Container Thrillers

#ProPlantTips for Care:

These rugged plants are easy to care for and grow in full sun or shaded conditions. In very hot areas, give them shade in the afternoon. Nandina needs well-drained soil, so create a raised planting bed or use it in containers, if you have soil that retains water for a long time. Water carefully to establish, and provide supplemental water during long periods of drought from then on. You will get the best color with consistent color, and add 3-4 inches of arborist mulch over the root system to keep it cool.

Prune to shape once a year in late winter before new growth appears. Very gently rake your massed plantings to remove fallen foliage. You might consider a sheltered spot. For example, they'll thrive under the dappled shade of a Western Redbud or other small flowering tree.

Nature Hills Nursery is at the forefront of environmental regulatory compliance with all agricultural laws. We use an online tool called Plant Sentry™, which blocks shipments of plants that can behave invasively in your locale.

  • Grows in Full Sun to Part Shade
  • Almost Any Well-Drained Soil
