Plant Sentry™

Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.

This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

To obtain a more accurate shipment time-frame, simply enter your zip code in the “Find Your Growing Zone” box to the right. Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Due to winter weather we have put a hold on shipping to the areas shown below in grey. You can still order now and we will ship the plant to you during an appropriate time for your zone.

Stunning color and landscape protection! The Rose Glow Barberry (Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Rose Glow') is that rare triple threat in your garden! Its color, ease to grow and usefulness are unmatched.

This showy Japanese Barberry shrub is a show-stopper for its stunning foliage color. It has variegated leaves in the shades of purple, pink, and rose! It can tolerate some shade but its color will be very different, tending toward green with pink and red accents. This dramatic color stands out in the landscape even though it is deciduous, the leaves will fall off for the winter but the matching stem colors remain!

And so will the thorns! This makes Rose Glow a determined barrier against foot traffic and helps keep more tender plants out of the reach of deer. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 8, this rounded, compact shrub grows 2-3 feet tall and wide.

Landscape Application:

Rose Glow Barberry can stand on its own as a beautiful specimen plant or garden accent. Its color looks fantastic among other shrubs or perennials with burgundy, rose, pink, red, and purple flowers or foliage!

It also makes a striking grouping when planted in drifts or as a hedge. It can be left to grow as a naturally rounded shrub or pruned to tidy it up for neater presentations. Either way, the color will say stop on by, but the thorns will tell foot traffic which way not to walk! Do you have a corner yard that people cut through or an area you want the dogs to stay out of? Plant a row of Rose Gold Barberry! These plants quickly become great sunny-loving hedges, adding color to your landscape in the shrub border or possibly foundation, or where you want to prevent intruders.

As beautiful as these Barberries are, they hide a sharp little secret. Quarter-inch thorns line the branches - a painful surprise to trespassers when planted as a barrier plant in a border or hedge or under a window. They also provide protective cover for birds! Those tiny spring bell-shaped blooms will bring in the butterflies and bees too, even if you don't notice.

  • Variegated Red, Purple, Rose Foliage
  • Beautiful Round Shrub
  • Matching Stems For Winter Interest
  • Great For Bird Shelter & Container Gardening
  • Low Hedge, Barrier, Border & Specimen Plant

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Barberry bushes love sun, and the more sun Rose Glow gets, the more vibrant it appears, so choose your site accordingly! Provide well-drained soil that is on the acidic side for the best results. Highly adaptable to a wide range of soil types, new Barberry bushes do need regular water during their first growing season in the ground.

Pruning is not required unless changing shape or overall size. Wear leather gloves when working with Barberry, and just snip anything sticking out wild. Every 3-5 years, you can renewal prune by removing the oldest, fattest stems and allowing younger, more colorful stems to take over.

While thorny and not that tasty, so typically, deer will leave these thorny bushes alone. The Rose Glow Barberry is a breeze to grow, too. Once established, it is tough as nails - a foolproof plant to manage.

  • Full Sun For Best Color (Afternoon Shade In Hot Climates)
  • Moderate to Low Moisture Once Established
  • Any Well Drained Soil - Clay, Xeric & Sandy Conditions
  • Prune Spring After First Flush Of Color/Flowers
  • Deer, Drought & Disease Resistant
  • Very Easy To Grow!

While it is true that while some Barberry cultivars are invasive in some areas, they may not be invasive in all areas. So Nature Hills has taken the initiative to develop our own compliance company called Plant Sentry™ so that you will not be able to even purchase a plant that your state has prohibited because of invasiveness, insects, or disease. Plants may be available on our website, but if your state prohibits that plant from being shipped to you, the sale will not go through.

We have a full-time compliance officer who keeps those restrictions for all states current and up to date at all times. We are the only nursery selling plants online that is fully compliant according to each state's rules. Or contact your local County Extension Office to learn more. Learn more about how we use Plant Sentry™ to work with all state and local agricultural laws in our Garden Blog.

The Rose Glow Japanese Barberry will not disappoint when you add it to your landscape! Its color, easy-care nature, and workhorse abilities will serve you for many years! Order now at NatureHills.com!
